“Quinton Barnes is a vital and rising force” - The Wire
"The album is eerie and harsh in its embryonic stages before bursting into an avant-garde, jazz-like delirium” - The Quietus
“A Radical Sonic Reckoning and Reclamation of Black Experimental Music” - Jace Media Music
Quinton Barnes is a relentlessly ambitious Montreal-based artist exploring the edges of Canada’s music scene. Since 2018, he’s built a unique sound, writing, rapping, singing, producing, mixing, and mastering his own work across a prolific discography, pushing the boundaries of hip hop, R&B, hyperpop, footwork and experimental music.
Inspired by Afropessimist thought and the work of economist Jacques Attali, Quinton Barnes became interested in noise and its function within the context of Black music. He hoped to situate noise within a context of Black cultural expression, fusing soul and gospel-inspired vocals with noise, pushing the limits of Black genres to their sonic brink. Together with 7 of Montreal’s most daring experimental musicians they explore an expansive sound that merges avant-jazz, noise, hip-hop, breakbeat, drone, and footwork, supporting Barnes’ poetic, nihilistic sprechgesang.
The album 'Black Noise' was released to critical acclaim in June 2025. The full band come to Utrecht's Le Guess Who? festival in November and we've managed to get one of only 2 UK shows - the other at Rich Mix London with one of London's finest in Baba Yaga's Hut. This might be a once in a lifetime performance or this could be the birth of one of the scene's most exciting talents. Either way you'll be want to be part of history!
