The Astrological Venus: The Art of Loving
"We discover ourselves through reflecting upon what we love and find beautiful, because the object of desire is a hook for the projection of what is of greatest beauty and highest value within oneself… in Plato’s Phaedro, where he speaks of seeing mirrored in the face of one’s beloved a glimpse of the god to whom one’s soul belongs. This is the most profound meaning of Venus—the beloved, be it person, object or intellectual ideal, as the mirror of one’s own soul."
— Liz Greene, The Inner Planets: Building Blocks of Personal Reality
Overview
In popular astrology, Venus is often said to represent “the type of person you are attracted to.” On a deeper level, however, Venus concerns our capacity for self-love, our ability to love others, and—most importantly—our sense of self-worth: the fundamental question of Am I worthy?
Taste is another key theme of Venus. Even those who consider themselves the least fashionable express their values through their choices. For example, when you are in a shoe store and the prices are roughly the same, the pair you choose is the one that holds the most value for you—whether that value comes from comfort, style, price, or any other factor.
When we lose connection with Venus, it can give rise to underlying issues of low self-worth. This may manifest as low self-esteem, difficulty pleasing oneself, feeling undeserving of anything beautiful, overcompensating through workaholism or appearance-related anxiety, or measuring all value in terms of money. Some may even feel that unless they are loved by someone else, they have no intrinsic value.
This disconnection occurs in both men and women. Venus is connected to the feminine aspect within every person, which is why women often experience its issues more directly, sometimes influenced by matrilineal or familial transmission. Men can experience this too; when they lack connection to their feminine side, they may place their sense of self-worth in their partner, which is one reason why Venus is popularly associated with the type of person men are attracted to.
This is why it is essential to get to know your own Venus, to discover your sense of value within yourself, and to learn to love yourself before loving others.
