"I close my eyes, it is raining. I open them again; I see the rainbow. This was the first image I saw once I had put together all the works of the artists selected for the first exhibition at the L’Étoile Studio."
Marta Isabella Reina - The Curator
Friday the 29th of September 2023 is the opening day of the "Bristol Illustration Exhibition" featuring 13 artists from different backgrounds, experiences and approaches and showcasing works able to hypnotise, fascinate and enchant.
The gallery will be open on Friday by 6 pm for the vernissage and a private view with artists, friends and press and then from 7 pm to the general audience. Entry is free but we suggest getting a ticket to be sure to get in. Exhibited artwork will be for sale on the day and then on Saturday and Sunday (3-8 p.m.). The exhibition will take place at L'étoile Studio - a new art space and gallery that aims to give voice to the city’s artists and is based in Old Market (18 West Street, BS2 0BH).
Bristol, a chaotic, noisy, bustling city, where nature and animals sneak as mysterious presences and apparitions. In one corner someone is partying, in the next one you can hear the echo of a Tibetan gong, someone sleeps, someone meditates, someone dreams, someone creates secretly like a contemporary alchemist.
13 artists, an odd number, a nameless arcane. The number that signifies the breakdown of harmony, embodying disorder. It indicates, therefore, instability and uncertainty. Is it not what life is like? And is it not that sense of uncertainty that drives us to create, perhaps to find answers?
13 is a number that holds all possibilities together, the number 1 is the creator source of all that exists and that it is, and the number 3 is the first action, the creative explosion, expressiveness.
We have 13 artists offering their stories, experiences and visions from places far and near, the Forest of Dean, the frozen lakes of Finland, the warmth of Spain or the spiritual lands of India, and much more. The artists of this exhibition generate visions and images sometimes distorted, psychedelic, and dreamlike. Personal and intimate works are somehow connected together. Archetypal images that, perhaps, come from our collective unconscious and the artist is the medium.
Images are inspired by streams of consciousness in relation to the energies of the universe, fractals, spots, and imprints. Illustration is hybridised with painting, different languages and media are blended, producing a tableau of contrasts and colours.
