on Saturday 7th September. The event starts at 12:00.
Bristol's only Maracatu group, Afon Sistema, are opening their doors for a drumming workshop this September.
Maracatu is a Brazilian artform originating in Recife, Pernambuco. Drawing on origins from African, Indigenous & Portuguese influences, Maracatu is one of the most popular Carnival rhythms in the North-East of Brazil. Afon Sistema has been running for 10 years here in Bristol, and we are dedicated to studying and performing this music in a holistic way. Not only a drumming group, Afon Sistema also focusses equally on the traditional songs of Maracatu - as well as some more modern compositions.
Our members are a commited, diverse, fun-loving group who love to get together and play Maracatu, including performances around the UK and also a yearly group trip to Carnival in Brazil.
We have around 6 or 7 places on the course this year for new drummers to join our group! For the workshop, we will invite 20 people to come and play for the day. Due to limited numbers of instruments available, we will not be able to accept everyone onto the course.
We encourage anyone who's interested in Maracatu to come and give it a go!
We particularly welcome interest from people with musical experience, singers and people who have already got some experience of Brazilian percussion. We are not really a beginerrs group as we really want to keep the quality of musicality as high as possible.
