A
clubnight
on Sunday 10th July. The event starts at 20:00.
Back in the Swing era, jazz recordings from New Orleans and Harlem spread around the world like wildfire, and the African diaspora recognised it as their own. Every city brought a new take on the jazz sound, blending traditional rhythms and melodies alongside western instruments played with a new freedom. Kwela was born in South Africa, HighLife in Ghana, Bossa Nova in Brazil…
To celebrate all the sounds of this era, we’ll be getting down on the dance floor to all those old swinging rhythms. We aim to be an open space where we share and learn from each other, and appreciate the style that everyone brings to the jam!
Joel Ovonlen-Jones will teach a taster class in swing (lindy hop) with some vernacular jazz steps. Class starts at 8pm and costs £5 (main event is free).
Music with DJ Sugarpusher, digging deep in the World Jazz from 9pm.
If you want to party late we’ll be spinning House, Broken beat and Afrobeats after 11.
