'[An] exhilarating evening of playing... sensitively lyrical and full of zest.'
Bristol Music Club

The formidable South Korean jazz duo of pianist-singer Yunmi Kang and guitarist Sangyeon Park distil their dazzling precision and cool soulfulness into elegant and thrilling performances, powered by global-jazz collective BEJE/British European Jazz Ensemble's dynamic sound.

Performing captivating originals from the 2019 album 'Modernised Sacrifice', and compelling jazz classics, this fascinating collaboration showcases the magic of Yunmi's astonishing pure voice and immensely exciting pianism, Sangyeon's fluid and distinctive playing, and the mesmeric musical alchemy between BEJE and their guests.

'Kang's voice is astonishingly good... the blend with David Mowat's clear-toned trumpet gave the whole thing something of the air of the great Azimuth [trio], with Norma Winstone and Kenny Wheeler.'

Yunmi Kang's remarkable voice ranges from delicate eloquence to husky, almost-Brazilian timbres, and invokes comparisons to Norma Winstone for her melodic wordless improvisations and Ella Fitzgerald for her full-throated scat. The purity of her tone is especially ear-catching, effortlessly ringing through the music even at it's most frenetic. She is also a gifted, immensely exciting pianist.

Yunmi Kang studied piano in Germany, and received a Jazz Vocal Masters Degree from Conservatorium Van Amsterdam, winning second place at the 2011 Netherlands Jazz Vocalists Competition. She has performed at the National Museum Of Korea, Taehwa River International Jazz Festival, Yongin Jazz Festival, and is Professor Of Music at Chugye Conservatory Seoul.

Hailed as one of the finest guitarists in Korea, Sangyeon Park is a masterful player, compelling and energetic with a distinctive aesthetic, whether playing easily rolled variations on a tune, snappy hard-bop or bluesy, gospel-grooves.

Sangyeon Park studied at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague and has appeared at numerous jazz concerts and festivals in Korea and internationally, notably Thailand international Jazz Conference. Park teaches at Joongbu University.

Both are currently lighting up the vibrant and stylistically wide-ranging jazz scene in South Korea.

Part of the BEJE 'Siblings Not Fools' Autumn 2024 tour, a celebration of the creative energy and unity possible when cultures meet through the medium of music, and a testament to Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1964 declaration: 'live together as brothers or perish together as fools'. This series of collective collaborations with international artists from Korea, Palestine, Italy, and Wales, is presented (and recorded live for an anthology album to be released in the new year) primarily at grassroots and non-traditional venues, and is supported by skills/experience development workshops.
