A Connecting Conversation event | THE LIVELY SELF AND THE DAMAGED WORLD
Whilst psychoanalysts such as Harold Searles had drawn attention to the vital significance of our (often destructive) relations to the nonhuman environment, Sally Weintrobe was the first to situate this specifically in the context of the escalating climate emergency and she now chairs The International Psychoanalytic Association’s Committee on Climate Change. She has produced two books on this subject, the latest The Psychological Roots of the Climate Crisis: Neoliberal Exceptionalism and the Culture of Uncare having just recently been published. Sally will share some of her thinking, such as the culture of uncare, the ecological imaginary and the nature and role of exceptionalism in both self and society. But in this conversation Sally will also reflect upon how her engagement with these issues has arisen in the course of her own life history, growing up in apartheid South Africa, and later developing her practice as a psychoanalyst in the UK.

ABOUT SALLY WEINTROBE
Sally Weintrobe, a practising psychoanalyst, is a Fellow of the Institute of Psychoanalysis in London. She sees a psychoanalytic approach as a vital part of understanding how to engage people about the seriousness of climate change and how to understand current levels of denial. She has written and lectured widely on these subjects and on our relationship with nature. Her commitment to fostering interdisciplinary exchange with other human scientists about engaging with climate change has led to this remarkable book.
