This is an online and live seated yoga class as part of the launch of Stephen Lightbown’s second poetry collection 'The Last Custodian.' Set in a post apocalypse world where the last survivor on Earth is Luke, a paraplegic.
Stephen will be joined by certified yoga teacher Biddy Messchaert who is based in Delft in the Netherlands. Biddy will start the event by guiding participants through a 30-minute seated yoga class, suitable for all abilities and all levels of experience.
This Yoga class will be a little different from the classes you know and will be perfect to imagine joining in should you find yourself surviving an apocalypse. You'll need a chair or other seat, preferably without arm rests. make sure the soles of your feet are fully supported (if not bring books or yoga blocks to rest your feet and bring the floor up to you ). Bring a scarf or tie or a Yoga strap. Please wear comfortable clothing.
After the class, there will be a chance to rest and relax whilst Stephen shares poems from the book. After the poems there will be a short discussion between Stephen and Biddy with a chance for you to ask questions if you'd like to.
Mark your calendar, set your alarms, and wear something red or orange. This is an event not to be missed. Beaming live in to your living room, bedroom, kitchen or yoga studio on 12 September from 10am
The yoga class and poems will be BSL interpreted and copies of poems can be made available in advance on request.

Stephen Lightbown is a Blackburn born, Bristol based poet. Paralysed following an accident in 1996 when he was 16 Stephen uses his poems to give a voice to his disability. He has spoken at events across the UK and at festivals such as Shambala, Womad, Camp Kin and Lyra Bristol Poetry Festival. Stephen is the author of two poetry collections The Last Custodian and Only Air and in August 2021 he performed his first commission for theatre, a piece about applying for the PIP disability benefit. Stephen is also trying to find a home for his first middle grade novel and is the Chair of the international dance company Candoco. He can be found via most social media channels via @spokeandpencil.
Biddy is a Dutch Yoga Teacher, living in Delft with the amazing Joost (human) and Jilly (dog). As the founder of Yoga Vayu she teaches different styles of Yoga, both online and in person. She also hosts a variety of international workshops and retreats, also both online and in person. She has over 600 hours of training and certifications in Yoga Flow, Modern Yoga, Restorative Yoga, Yoga Nidra and Kid’s Yoga. Her teaching style is open and welcoming to all bodies and minds, always aiming to help you find the movement or relaxation you need.
