In the last few especially, the conversation around activism has grown. We are seeing a new world of activism with social media and influencers - but how has this changed over the years? What about protest? Legalisation change? How do these two worlds mesh? How can you wade through performative allyship and step into a space which is grounded in real, tangible progress?
Joining us to lead the conversation are two absolutely incredible speakers - Laurie O’Garro and Everyday Mag Diversity Strategist and Creative Director, Heba

Laurie is a teacher from Buckinghamshire. She started her teaching career in London in 1993 but left after five years, having experienced workplace bullying. She worked as a racial equality officer and equalities trainer in the noughties before returning to school, this time to work as a mentor. Laurie currently works for the Met Police and writes in her spare time. You may have seen a few of her articles on The Everyday if you’re eagle eyed.

Born and raised in the incredibly multicultural town of Slough, Heba is a second generation Sudanese female. From a young age (around 6 years old) Heba has been attending protests to fight global injustice. But she was first aware as her position as a black British muslim working class woman in society upon entering university. Attending the University of Bath and entering the industry of engineering, she was occupying majority white middle class spaces. Through the trauma of racism and genderism Heba faces, she fights for the right of her black and black female community through writing, speaking and protesting. She has recently organised two protests and was a speaker for the Bristol Labour Party at a meeting to discuss Black Lives Matter.

Join us for the conversation 7-8pm on May 6th on Zoom. The link to the event will be posted in the FB group 10 minutes before the start.
