In 1968, film student Holger Meins made the short film ‘How do I make a Molotov cocktail?’. On 1 June 1972, he was arrested in Frankfurt am Main together with Andreas Baader and Jan-Carl Raspe. In 1974, he died during a hunger strike protesting against prison conditions.
The ‘Kommando Holger Meins,’ named after him, stormed the German Embassy in Stockholm on 24 April 1975 to free political prisoners, shooting two hostages in the process.
In the same year, schoolkids in Kiel began to discover Super 8 film for themselves. Under the name Filmgruppe Chaos, they used the medium to express their view of the world beyond the usual film language.
Almost five decades later, the film group drew on footage of Holger Meins making a Molotov cocktail and contacted Lutz Taufer, a former member of the ‘Kommando Holger Meins’. Long conversations about the 1968 movement, the RAF, 20 years in prison, working in a Brazilian favela and today’s political conditions form the basis of the film ‘Jeder ist verantwortlich’ (Everyone is Responsible). It was shot with an Arriflex camera on 16mm black-and-white film, which was then developed by hand. The film could have been made by an underground filmmaker of the 1960s.
