Sea Change: Unite with Light Festival to illuminate Rockaway Park in celebration and aid of ocean conservation

On Saturday 15th November, Temple Cloud’s Rockaway Park will be transformed for Sea Change: Unite with Light Festival, a day-long celebration that unites creativity, performance, and community action to highlight the importance of protecting our oceans.

The festival aims to raise awareness of the urgent challenges facing the planet’s oceans, from plastic pollution to overfishing and to unite communities through creativity, learning and connection. Visitors are encouraged to bring family and friends and to contribute what they can through donations.

Running from 12pm to 9pm, Sea Change: Unite with Light invites visitors to take part in a series of creative workshops, performances, art exhibitions and talks, all raising awareness and funds for Project One Wave and the Captain Paul Watson Foundation UK.

The festival programme includes a live Q&A with Captain Paul Watson, the founder of the Sea Shepherd movement and a pioneer in marine conservation. Eco-artivist and waste mosaicist Francesca Busca will also deliver a talk on transforming waste into art to inspire sustainable change. Visitors will have the opportunity to view a powerful ocean documentary narrated by Sir David Attenborough in Rockaway’s community cinema, showcasing the beauty and fragility of marine ecosystems.

Throughout the day, festival-goers can take part in creative workshops including mural painting with lead artist Andy, willow lantern making, upcycling art, and traditional block printing. The gallery at Rockaway Park will display multi-media artworks and installations that celebrate the ocean while exploring issues such as pollution and overfishing.

The donation-entry event will culminate in an immersive Lantern Procession and live performance featuring environmentalist performance troupe Red Rebel Brigade and drummers from Rhythms of Resistance. The theatrical, marine-themed parade will bring together illuminated sea creatures, puppets and handmade lanterns created throughout the day in workshops using both traditional willow techniques and recycled materials. Enhanced by video projections and a dramatic musical score, the procession will celebrate water as the essence of life and highlight the need for collective action to protect it.

Doug Francisco, Founder of Invisible Circus and creator of Red Rebel Brigade, said: “Unite with Light is about coming together in creativity and compassion to shine a light on the beauty and fragility of our oceans. The Red Rebels have always stood as a silent symbol of connection and environmental awareness, and it’s inspiring to see that message carried forward through community, art and action. This festival is a chance for people to be part of something truly hopeful - a shared expression of care for our planet and each other.”

As night falls, the site will be transformed with light, sound and colour. DJs will play roots, dub and world music, while Rockaway’s café serves an ocean-inspired menu by Chef Myk, and the NoMad Bar offers mulled cider and spiced hot chocolate. An ambient underwater audio installation will play throughout the venue, using field recordings to bring the sounds of the ocean to life.
