A
gig
held at Rough Trade Bristol
on Friday 11th November. The event starts at 20:00.
Sounds Queer are extremely excited to announce they have teamed up with Bristol’s acclaimed club night Punka for their next queer event. That’s right, they’re going on the road! On Friday, 11th November 2022 Sounds Queer and Punka will be joining forces at Rough Trade Bristol for an evening of drag, debauchery and drama!
Punka is an alternative queer club night based in Bristol. They have been putting on drag, burlesque shows and live gigs for the past five years; bringing indie, rock and riot grrrl vibes to the LGBTQIA+ scene. Punka has been a part of Bristol Pride every year and they have also collaborated with Spotify. They are committed to creating safe spaces, diverse lineups and championing marginalised voices.
The evening will be hosted by Bristol’s very own recording artist, drag creature, gender destroyer and internationally renowned cabaret and burlesque host DIS. They have spent over ten years touring the world and encouraging Queerdos everywhere to become a DIS-ciple; embracing the revolution of pleasure.
DIS will be joined by our amazing headliner Freddie Lewis; a Bristol-based songwriter, poet and performer who creates work defined by playful lyricism, catchy hooks, and nuanced emotional accounts. Freddie takes their love of poetry and enshrines it within their signatory brand of bedroom soul-pop. Freddie has received plays on BBC Radio 1 and BBC 6Music and was also featured as the cover artist on Spotify editorial playlist, ‘Transcend’, for four months. Throughout 2022 Freddie has continued to grow, releasing his music alongside poetry B-sides, as well as performing at the likes of The Great Escape Festival, Bristol Pride, 2000 Trees and Glastonbury.
Supporting Freddie will be the incredible Kerensa. Self-proclaimed genre-fluid studio gremlin, Kerensa has a sound that will remind you of music’s purpose. Shifting seamlessly from dark and brooding to upbeat and satirical in what can only be described as a unique and unexpected vocal delivery, her music kicks back against the status quo. Unafraid to write about challenging topics, you will find it hard not to connect with an artist that shows you such honesty.
SQ’s Toby Corton will also be supporting; a 'charismatic queer cockney creative' who describes his sound as “a modern British take on neo-soul built on a foundation of frank queer storytelling”. Toby has been making music since 2017 and his love of the creative process has led him to taking photos of the likes of already legendary Drag Queen Bimini and London Trans Pride Founder Lucia Blayke.
“Despite London being a cultural hub for both music and the queer community, there are few live music nights whose priority it is to provide a platform for LGBTQIA+ artists. In addition to this, there is a lack of truly inclusive events, gigs or venues for emerging music that caters to the specific needs of the community”, co-founder Toby Corton explains. Run by music lovers and queer creators, Sounds Queer aims to provide a platform for those artists as well as a safe space for the community to discover and support them. You lucky devils.
Sounds Queer was founded by the artist-led collective VETA and queer creatives DYVR and Toby Corton. DYVR is a non-binary artist and activist who creates ethereal, ambient-electronic loveliness and is also a founding partner and creator of the bespoke handmade jewellery line Quearrings.
