Spindle Ensemble

Spindle Ensemble are an experimental instrumental quartet from Bristol’s music collective Bloom (Tezeta, Yama Warashi, Count Bobo, Dubi Dolczek, Evil Usses, Leonie Evans, Alabaster dePlume, Run Logan Run). They perform original compositions by Daniel Inzani that hover cinematically somewhere between jazz, folk and classical idioms, taking inspiration from artists such as Moondog, Maurice Ravel, Charles Mingus and Mulatu Astatke. Their debut album 'Bea' was released as a gatefold vinyl via Adderwell Music in Nov 2017 (full release 26th Jan 2018).

Bea was recorded in ‘Grand Chapel Studios‘ in Bedfordshire. It was mixed and engineered by Michael Pearce who created a stereo image of the room and Spindle performed as an ensemble, in order to capture their sound raw and live in an acoustic environment that bought the best out of their instruments’ natural resonance. Spindle Ensemble recorded their debut album in April 2017 and named it Bea after Jo’s recently born daughter to mark the birth of the band. The striking cover art for Bea was created by well known Australian artist and designer Anna Higgie.

Spindle Ensemble's live performances feature a unique instrumentation played by:

Daniel Inzani - piano, Celtic harp, accordion.

Caelia Lunniss - violin.

Harriet Riley - marimba, vibraphone.

Jo Silverston - cello.

Ed Penfold -

Edward Penfold’s music is a blend of the old and the new, nostalgic but not dated. More than anything it sounds like now. It’s music from the heart, a hazy collection of sounds and moods sometimes upbeat, sometimes down but always genuine and always captivating. His lyricism reflects the eloquence and observation of a very English sort of poetry, seeing the depth in the shallows of life, the profundity in the mundane. All accepted with a matter-of-factness that is reflected in the driving impetus in every song, whether slow or fast or groovy.
