“I’m fascinated by writing songs about people – real or imagined - and exploring the situations they find themselves in. I like the lyrics to drive the melody – not the other way around. You get more surprises that way.” So speaks soul-jazz singer/songwriter and guitarist Emma Hutchinson about her latest album, “Coming Home”. The title track is an emotive jazz ballad which tells the story of a WWII soldier’s apprehension on returning home after peace is declared. At the other extreme, “A Great Year” is sunny, optimistic Bill Withers-inspired soul. Featuring the incomparable Ruth Hammond on keyboards/bass, guitarist Andy Christie and Kevin O’Rourke on drums, expect to be drawn into Emma’s stories of life and love, in all its guises.
