Seafaring’s Queer RADICAL star – Hailing from Shirehampton. Mick Belsten (1934-1990)
Radical gay media activism thrived in its early 1970s heyday partly because of Mick Belsten, a lad who shifted from a Shirehampton semi (in North West Bristol) to London's coolest queer communes. You can hear the story of this seafarer-turned-journalist, whose dad was a foreman stevedore at Avonmouth docks, on Thursday 9th July at the Shirehampton Methodist Church.
Historian of LGBT+ seafarers Dr Jo Stanley, co-author of Hello Sailor!, will give an illustrated talk about Mick's progress from an old-established local family, a St Bernard's pupil ,to international change-maker at Gay Times.
