A
event
held at Sidney & Eden
on Tuesday 13th May. The event starts at 19:00.
Next up at the Indie Classics Film Club, it’s TOUCH OF EVIL (1958), by the one and only Orson Welles.
Welles stars and directs in this seedy thriller about corrupt cops on the US-Mexican border. He plays Hank Quinlan, a grotesque, bigoted police detective whose habit of planting evidence sets him at odds against the more idealistic cop Vargas (Charlton Heston).
Despite making the film still most synonymous with the label 'greatest of all time’ in Citizen Kane, Welles was never appreciated by Hollywood studios, and frequently clashed with them over edits. Touch of Evil is no exception, and was to be his last film made in America before becoming truly independent in Europe.
Nevertheless, he still managed to make something special despite this studio pressure, with virtuoso techniques and a thrillingly innovative look and sound that inspired many filmmakers of the future, and a memorable performance fuelled by his famous charisma.
The start time will be at 19.00 at the Sidney and Eden, with doors at 18.30, and entry is free. As ever, all are welcome to stay for a drink afterwards afterwards.
