A
event
held at Sidney & Eden
on Tuesday 6th January. The event starts at 19:00.
To bring in the new year, the first Indie Classics Film Club screening of 2026 will be Mike Leigh’s ANOTHER YEAR (2010), on Tuesday January 6th at the Sidney and Eden.
Set over the course of a single year, Jim Broadbent and Ruth Sheen star as a.happily married couple of many years, surrounded by friends and family much less happy - above all Lesley Manville’s Mary, an eccentric, exasperating, lonely middle-aged divorcee whose sadness and desperation becomes more and more acute and devastating as the film goes on.
As is typical for a Mike Leigh film, it’s a film pitched perfectly between tragedy and comedy, with as many laugh-out-loud moments as there are tear-inducing ones; while his unique method of rehearsal and improvisation leads to some outstanding performances and characters you will remember for a long time.
As always, the screening will be in the downstairs room at the Sidney and Eden, with doors opening at 18:30 and the film beginning at 19:00 - and entry is free! And for anyone who wants to hang out and talk about the film, we’ll be staying for a drink afterwards.
