A Woman Under the Influence at Sidney & Eden
Headfirst Editor's Pick

"Free entry! Gena Rowlands plays a woman slowly unravelling beneath the pressures of marriage, motherhood and social expectation in this masterpiece of domestic horror; her volcanic, career-defining performance is still devastating in its realism 50+ years after its release. A once-seen, never-forgotten portrait of family dysfunction and female subjugation."

The Indie Classics Film Club returns May 27th, in our new slot of the last Wednesday of the month, for a screening of A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE (1974)!

What does it mean to be ‘mad’? Is a mother constrained by the limitations and conformity of marital life mad to act out against it, or is that the only sane thing to do? That’s one of the key themes of John Cassavetes’s A Woman Under the Influence, a raw, intense, portrayal of a marriage under strain.

In a performance considered by many as one of the best of all time, Gena Rowlands plays Mabel, a woman whose increasingly eccentric behaviour causes alarm in those around her, including her similarly complex husband Nick, played by Peter Falk.

Director Cassavetes was acclaimed as the pioneer of independent filmmaking, who paved the way for the likes of Martin Scorsese, and this is his magnum opus. Using techniques like hand-held cameras and improvised acting, there’s an intimacy and naturalism to his portrayal of domestic life that the traditional trappings of Hollywood could  never achieve.

As ever, we’re in the downstairs room of the Sidney and Eden, with doors opening at 18.30 for a 19.00 start. Free entry! And all are welcome to stay for a drink with us at the bar afterwards.
