David Bollier, an American activist and scholar of the commons, will speak about the great promise of the commons in developing practical alternatives to the increasingly dysfunctional and corrupt market/state system. He will describe the greater diversity of commons around the world today, the strategic trends that seem to be emerging, the challenges that commons face, and the potential of the Bristol Commons in pioneering new forms of coordinated action.
David's work is well known across the globe for expanding commons thinking and bringing greater clarity and understanding whilst re-imagining economics, politics, and culture. His work includes two seminal texts 'Think Like a Commoner: A Short Introduction to the Life of the Commons' and his recent collaboration with Silke Helfrich 'Free, Fair, and Alive: The Insurgent Power of the Commons'.
This talk and Q&A is a rare chance to hear David speak in the UK and to explore examples and the inner dynamics of effective commons. For those interested in a deeper-dive, David will be participating in a workshop after the event - developing ideas and the emerging framework for The Bristol Commons. Anyone who aligns with the values and strategic objectives of The Bristol Commons is invited to stay and participate: www.coexistuk.org/thebristolcommons
