OFELIA RODRÍGUEZ: 'TALKING IN DREAMS' EXHIBITION

Spike Island presents 'Talking in Dreams', a major monographic exhibition by Colombian artist Ofelia Rodríguez (1946–2023). This extensive exhibition brings together a selection of over 70 paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures made over the past five decades.
Influenced by memories of her native Barranquilla, on the Caribbean coast of Colombia, Rodríguez combines found objects and images rich in symbolism to construct humorous yet critical works that examine cultural identity and gender stereotypes.
Dawn Ades is Professor Emerita of the History and Theory of Art at the University of Essex, Professor of the History of Art at the Royal Academy, a former trustee of Tate (1995-2005) and of the National Gallery (2000-2005), trustee of the Estorick Collection, Fellow of the British Academy and of the Association of Art Historians. In 2013 she was appointed CBE for services to higher education.
She pioneered the study of Latin American Art and her research has otherwise focused on Dada and Surrealism, and more recently on women artists, which has aligned these areas of interest with publications on Leonora Carrington, Maria Izquierdo and Ofelia Rodríguez.
Ades has curated numerous exhibitions, including, – Dada and Surrealism Reviewed (1978); Art in Latin America: the Modern Era 1820-1980 (1989); Dalí’s Optical Illusions (2000); Salvador Dalí: the Centenary Exhibition (2004); Undercover Surrealism: Georges Bataille and Documents (2006); Close-Up: Proximity and Defamiliarisation in Art, Photography and Film (2008); and Dalí/Duchamp. She has also published extensively, including Photomontage (1986), Marcel Duchamp (with N. Cox and D.Hopkins, 1999), A Dada Reader (2006) and Writings on Art and Anti-art (2015).
Gabriel Pérez-Barreiro is a curator and art historian. He was Director and Chief Curator of the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros from 2008–18, and is currently Senior Advisor. He was Curator of the 33rd São Paulo Biennial in 2018 and curator of the Brazilian pavilion at the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019. From 2002–08 he was Curator of Latin American Art at the Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas, Austin. In 2007 he was Chief Curator of the 6th Mercosur Biennial in Porto Alegre, Brazil. He holds a PhD in Art History and Theory from the University of Essex, and an MA in Art History and Latin American Studies from the University of Aberdeen. From 2000-02 he was Director of Visual Arts at The Americas Society in New York. Prior to that he was Exhibitions and Programmes Coordinator at the Casa de América in Madrid. From 1993 to 1998 he was Founding Curator of the University of Essex Collection of Latin American Art. He has published and lectured widely on modern and contemporary art from Latin America. He is a member of the collective ESTAR(SER), the Esthetic Society for Transcendental & Applied Realization.
