Suzi MacGregor / Rachael Dadd + OAK Choir

On Saturday 28 Nov, Cuculi presents a special extended event at St Anne's Church in Greenbank to celebrate the launch of Suzi MacGregor's debut album Peregrina. The evening gig will feature Suzi performing with some of Bristol's best musicians, plus an opening slot from alt-folk legend Rachael Dadd and her brilliant OAK Choir. Before the gig, Suzi will host a workshop that explores the nuances of her songwriting style, with an opportunity to learn some of the gorgeous vocal harmonies from her album. SUZI MACGREGOR - PEREGRINA

Peregrina is the debut album from Bristol-based songwriter, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Suzi MacGregor. It's a compelling 11-track collection of intelligent and persuasive alt-pop, full of unpredictable hooks and profoundly moving lyrics. Produced by Richard Lobb and featuring an array of musicians from her community in Bristol, the album moves smartly through a spectrum of musical moods, yet maintains a coherent continuity anchored by MacGregor's magnetic voice. Her songwriting pays homage to the classic 60s Laurel Canyon sound, but also draws from the cool fierceness of melodic contemporary jazz, persuasive Latin grooves and the heartfelt immediacy of folk. Written over several years, Peregrina feels like a retrospective on MacGregor's turbulent twenties, full of travel, change and heartbreak - but, beneath it all, a poignant story of recovery and reclamation. Her gift for storytelling and world-building comes through in a strong sense of place and character, all expressed in such vividly personal terms as to offer a universal resonance across a broad audience of listeners.

Rachael Dadd is a spirited independent songwriter based in Bristol who has headlined tours around the UK, Europe and Japan. Her most recent album ‘Kaleidoscope’ (2022) included a limited edition DINKED vinyl with a bonus EP of non-album tracks featuring This is the Kit and Rozi Plain, and followed Rachael's critically acclaimed ‘Flux’ album that gained a coveted 6 Music's Album of the Day. Rachael has received wide support from DJs on BBC 6 Music, BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 3 Late Junction, BBC Radio 4, Xfm and France Musique, and has done multiple live sessions for Radio 4's Loose Ends and The Roddy Hart Show on BBC Scotland as well as creating an hour show for BBC6Music's Loose Yourself. With a background in fine art, Rachael puts great attention into the conceptual and visual through her music videos, album artwork and merchandise.

Rachael will be joined for this solo gig by OAK Choir (Of All Kin) which she runs with an ethos of inclusivity where joy and wellbeing are held above perfection. The songs she writes for OAK celebrate nature and community and are rich and grounding like roots and earth while simultaneously stretching open wide to the sky and the stars.
