Screening and Q&A: Black Bark Films Showcase

Join us for for an engaging evening exploring the work of award-winning female-led production company Black Bark Films, with a rare chance to hear from the makers.

Formed by St Anne’s House resident Jo Barker and Holly Black, Black Bark Films create sensitive and collaboratively driven documentaries that specialise in themes of social change.

The showcase focuses on relationships with land, labour, and community in the wake of challenges like climate change and Brexit.

One Acre (5mins)

The art of letting go of control in the face of adversity is explored by young new entrant farmer Liv, as she reflects on her experience of farming; from climate change, to community, to remaining hopeful when much is at stake. Commissioned by North Devon Moving Image as part of Down on the Farm. Directed by Jo Barker, Holly Black and Dee Butterly.

In Our Hands (68 mins)
The award-winning feature documentary was seen globally at over 400 community screenings and shown in the Houses of Parliament. In Our Hands tells the story behind the blood, sweat and tears of the farmers who are outgrowing the industrial food system in the wake of Brexit. At the heart of all change lies a story and In Our Hands is the story of a new kind of farm, a new kind of food and a new kind of society. Made in collaboration with The Landworkers' Alliance and directed by Jo Barker.

The Land That Holds Us (12 mins)

The Land That Holds Us is a deeply moving short documentary that follows four women forging lives in small-scale organic farming across the Sussex Weald and rural Mid-Wales. Through intimate interviews and beautifully observed footage from working market gardens, the film explores their relationships with land, labour, and community, while revealing the structural barriers they must navigate to build a future in farming. Made in collaboration with Rachael Durrant for the University of Sussex and directed by Rachael Durrant, Holly Black and Jo Barker.
