Music workshop: improvisation and composition at St Anne's house, The Chipper Room

A event on Monday 18th May. The event starts at 10:00.


A workshop for exploring music, creativity and improvisation. The workshop will start by exploring free improvisation and developing the skills needed to create musical improvisations as a group. This workshop is designed primarily for adults, anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult (21+) in possession of a separate ticket because of limited capacity in the room.

Listening
Awareness
Use of space
Use of contrast
Tempo and beat but also free tempo
Getting comfortable with the unfamiliar
Dissonance and less familiar harmonies
Non musical inputs
Musical games and music as play

Jazz techniques we'll also explore:
Chord progressions
Modes/scales
Grooves
Melody embellishments
Transcription/language

Composition: (at a later stage, not in the first series of workshops)
Melody, harmony and rhythm
Intervals
Working with the familiar and unfamiliar in composing melodies
Different harmonic approaches/musical periods
20th century techniques
Graphic scores
