Come along to see 10 of Bristol's finest wordsmiths battle it out to be crowned the 2024 Lyra Bristol Poetry Slam Champion, as well as feature performances from world-class poets. The winning poet will need to impress the judging panel as well as YOU, the audience, who have the biggest say of all. Raucous, energetic and passionate, this is an audience favourite at Lyra Festival and a landmark event in Bristol's cultural calendar.

Safiya Kamaria Kinshasa
Safiya Kamaria Kinshasa is a British born Barbadian raised choreopoet who braids dance and poetry into her writing and performance practice. Safiya is an Obsidian Foundation alumna and an Apples & Snakes/ Jerwood Arts Poetry in Performance recipient. Her work has appeared in a variety of journals including Poetry London, Poetry Review, Wasafiri and The Caribbean Writer. Her debut poetry collection 'Cane, Corn & Gully' (published by Out-Spoken Press) explored the narratives of enslaved Barbadian women and their descendants through their dances. It is the first book to feature dance notation of the enslaved and was written in collaboration with the National Museum of Barbados. 'Cane, Corn & Gully' was the 2022 Poetry Book Society ‘Winter Choice’. It was shortlisted for the 2023 Rathbones Folio Prize and 2023 Felix Dennis Forward Prize for Best First Collection.
Emma Taylor:
Emma Taylor is a multi-slam-winning spoken word artist, event organiser, and performer based in Bath. In 2023 she became a Bristol Slam Champion and placed 2nd in the 2023 Farrago UK Slam Championship. Emma is a UniSlam finalist, Oooh Beehive slam winner and proud founder of Hear My Voice: the LGBTQ+ Poetry Night.
