Beethoven Piano Sonata No 31 Op 110 A flat

The piano was Brahms' own instrument; crucible to the boldly experimental ideas of his youth, yet also a precious confidant, lending an ear to the confessional, sometimes nostalgic works of his pianistic Indian summer - distilled, reconciled, achingly immediate. Unassailable Brahmsian Stephen Kovacevich brings a lifetime of experience to signature works at both ends of Brahms' output, bookended by dance-driven Bach and transcendental late Beethoven.

This concert is being broadcast live on BBC Radio 3.
