Rookeries . Support from James Osland

Rookeries . Support from James Osland at St John On The Wall

A gig on Saturday 19th September. The event starts at 20:00.

Rookeries are an acoustic prog-folk duo that unravel stories with the intricate communication between their guitars. After several months of writing and improvising, Rookeries officially formed in Bristol in 2017.

Naturally drawn to each other's style and craft the duo collect and collate movements and riffs drawing from their wide range of contrasting influences. The result is a truly unique acoustic sound.

Rookeries have performed all over Bristol, Bath and the South West and have been played on BBC Radio Bristol. They have two studio EPs with their third set for a 2027 release date.

James Osland is a multidisciplinary audio-visual artist based on the South Devon coast. His work explores the relationship between sound, memory, and place, creating intimate sonic environments shaped by field recordings, subtle melodies, micro-textures, and a gentle sense of nostalgia.

Over the past decade, James has released music through labels including Fluid Audio, Home Normal, Dewtone Recordings, Flaming Pines, and Whitelabrecs. He has also collaborated with artists including Andrew Heath, Darren McClure, and Thomas Hoey, as part of the duo Tomosla. His work moves between immersive soundscapes, melodic ambient music, and quietly evolving drone.

James is also the founder and curator of Elm Records, an independent label dedicated to organic ambient music. Over more than a decade, he has developed a distinctive catalogue featuring artists such as The Green Kingdom, Grotta Veterano, Francisco Sonur, Glacis, and The Humble Bee. His photography also plays an important role in the label’s visual identity, with landscape images reflecting the mood and character of its releases.
