A event on Monday 13th April. The event starts at 18:30.
A powerful film screening and discussion exploring Black resistance in Bristol.
Easton Cowfolk Radical Film Club launches a 3-part series on the history, struggle and resilience of Black communities in the UK, with a specific focus on Bristol.
Part 2 (13/04/26) focuses on the rise of racism in mainstream politics and across the streets of the UK. Inequality, societal oppression, police brutality and unemployment experienced by Black communities across the country contributed to the St Paul’s Uprisings of 1980 – an act of powerful resistance and defiance.
The evening will explore the community resistance in the struggle for freedom and to be treated with dignity, equality, and justice within systems not built for us.
As the UK and Bristol continue to face disruption, hate and fear-mongering from the far-right – often encouraged and exploited by those in power – we cannot forget that the fight against fascism is not new.
Communities in St Paul’s and surrounding areas have been resisting fascism for generations. There is strength in collective mobilisation, and by coming together we can cultivate hope and push for change.
This event will be hosted by Dr Edson Burton, a local historian and writer.
The evening will include:
- Screening of St Pauls Riots (1980) documentary (TV Eye), featuring discussions with local politicians and community leaders from the time on the lead-up to the uprisings and the conditions surrounding them
- A short film by Cargo Movement, Uprising 2020, exploring reflections from those present during the uprisings and the ongoing relevance and legacy of this historic resistance
- Panel discussion with Rubba, a prominent member of the community, and his friend – both present at the St Paul’s uprisings in 1980
- Audience contributions and Q&A
_Caribbean food and snacks from Glen Café will also be available for an additional cost when purchasing a ticket._
This community event is open to everyone – whether you’re familiar with this history or discovering it for the first time. No prior knowledge is needed.
After the event, we warmly invite you to join us at a local pub to connect and spend time together in a relaxed setting.
Presented by Easton Cowfolk Radical Film Club, in collaboration with members of the St Paul’s community._
The third and final part of this series will take place on 27/04/26.
