A event on Today. The event starts at 19:00.
A key challenge of our time is to understand the nature of the system - capitalism - which shapes every aspect of our daily lives and is fast driving us towards a cliff edge. Grasping capitalism in its totality is more vital than ever as we face deepening and mutually reinforcing crises of war and imperialism, environmental breakdown, economic instability, and international advances by far right purveyors of hate and darkness.
Such crises stem from a capitalist logic of incessant competition and accumulation of wealth in the hands of a tiny ruling section of society. Marxism explores how this inhuman logic undermines the very conditions for human flourishing and life itself. Yet it is also a system which, as Marx said, produces its own potential grave digger in the form of billions of working people and their allies.
Rather the being ‘extremist’, or 'deterministic', revolutionary Marxism grapples with if, and how, it is possible to pull the emergency brake and stop this destructive juggernaut which poses such a terrifying threat us all. And it suggests that the fight against all varieties of oppression – racism, sexism, transphobia, etc. - must be at the very heart of these struggles.
Come along and join in the discussion. All welcome. Organised by Bristol Socialist Workers Party.
What to expect at this meeting
An informal, friendly and welcoming atmosphere, in which a speaker will initially introduce the main topic before we break into smaller group discussion. Then we’ll come back together again for a wider discussion and questioning followed by a summing up. The second section of the meeting involves a more practical focus on current activities and campaigns. There will also be a bookstall and publicity for upcoming events.
