Tommy Robinson and the Remaking of British Fascism

Tommy Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, has been the key figure in Britain's fascist movement since the emergence of the English Defence League (EDL) in 2009. He has mobilised tens of thousands on the streets and reshaped the far right in Britain. He has done this by distancing himself from the most discredited elements of British fascism's ideological tradition: overt admiration for Hitler, Nazi symbolism and explicit antisemitism.

This meeting, which is based on a recent article by the speaker in the International Socialism Journal, argues that his politics represent a new form of fascism—rooted in conspiratorial Islamophobia and counter-revolutionary mobilisation—and asks what this means for antifascist strategy today.

All welcome. Hosted by Bristol Socialist Workers Party.

What to expect at this meeting
An informal, friendly and welcoming atmosphere, in which a speaker will initially introduce the main topic before we break into smaller group discussion. Then we’ll come back together again for a wider discussion and questioning followed by a summing up. The second section of the meeting involves a more practical focus on current activities and campaigns. There will also be a bookstall and publicity for upcoming events.
