Joint gig by The Other Way Dystopian Soul jazz band and the Bristol Griot band

We invite you to imagine the future through rhythm and song in a beautiful church! What else could you possibly be doing?

The Other Way is the brainchild of trumpeter Rowan Porteous (Gifford’s Circus band, Baraka). It’s a band playing what he calls Dystopian Soul, with soulful lyrics about ecology and the future of humanity, a healthy slice of jazz and improvisation, and bird song as part of the instrumentation. Mike Flynn of Jazzwise described it as ‘off-kilter punk-jazz with a funky edge’. Features the great creative band that is Elly Hopkins on vocals (Hopkins and Oliver), Billie Bottle on keys and vocals (Mike Westbrook’s Uncommon Orchestra), Guillaume Ottaviani on bass (Mankala) and Emma Holbrook on drums (Psiren, Starlings).

The Bristol Griot project combines the melodies of master Kora player Moussa Kouyate with spoken word by
David Mowat (Bristol European Jazz Ensemble) exploring the twenty years of Bristol-based life of emigre Moussa. Also featuring concert harpist Emmy Broughton and virtuoso bass player and stalwart of the Bristol jazz scene Federico Leonori. Combining music and storytelling, the band revives the tradition of the griot.
