Rebecca May Johnson: Small Fires at Storysmith
See event details

A event on Thursday 12th October. The event starts at 18:30.

We are ravenously excited to welcome Rebecca May Johnson to Storysmith! Small Fires was officially one of our favourite books of 2022, and so when the paperback release came around we knew we had to get Rebecca to Bristol so we can obsessively talk about tomato sauce and ennui.

Equally excitingly, Rebecca will be in conversation with Amy Key, poet and writer of the phenomenally good memoir Arrangements in Blue. Desperately trying to avoid using food-based comparisons here, but with ingredients this distinguished you can be certain of a delectable evening of conversation.

About Rebecca May Johnson
Rebecca May Johnson has published essays, reviews and nonfiction with Granta, Times Literary Supplement and Daunt Books Publishing, among others, and is an editor at the trailblazing food publication Vittles. Small Fires is her first book.

About Small Fires
Small Fires is the thrillingly original book that is shaking up the food writing scene and challenging how we think about cooking and the kitchen.

Why do we cook? Is it just to feed ourselves and others? Or is there something more revolutionary going on? In Small Fires, Rebecca May Johnson reinvents cooking – that simple act of rolling up our sleeves, wielding a knife, spattering red hot sauce on our books – as a way of experiencing ourselves and the world. Cooking is thinking: about the liberating constraint of tying apron strings; the transformative dynamics of shared meals; the meaning of appetite and bodily pleasure; the wild subversiveness of the recipe, beyond words or control. This joyful, revelatory work of memory and meditation both complicates and electrifies life in the kitchen.

It shows us the radical potential of the thing we do every day: the power of small fires burning everywhere.

About Amy Key
Amy Key is a poet and writer based in London. She is the author of two collections of poetry, Luxe (Salt, 2013) and Isn’t Forever (Bloodaxe, 2018). Her first work of non-fiction, Arrangements in Blue, was published by Jonathan Cape (UK) in Spring 2023, alongside publication in the US (Liveright) and Italy (Rizzoli).
