The legendary LA proto-psychedelic band; key in the '80s Paisley Underground movement, drawing on 60s psych & inspiring the fuzzier 90s era, play Strange Brew

The Rain Parade are one of the foundational bands of the early 1980s Paisley Underground scene, created by a loose alliance of West Coast acts who looked back to the psychedelic era of the 1960s for inspiration. More than their peers the Rain Parade were deeply indebted to the mystical psych and hazy pop sounds of the bygone era, and their 1983 debut album Emergency Third Rail Power Trip combined languid tempos, streamlined melodies, modal counterpoints, and impressionistic lyrics with a skill that few of the original groups of the '60s could manage. They faced a major setback when founding member David Roback left to form Opal, though they bounced back to release an EP steeped in folk-rock and Crazy Horse-style guitar workouts (1984's Explosions in the Glass Palace), and an LP that cut back on psychedelia in favor of more modern rock sounds (1986's Crashing Dream) before splitting up. They re-formed in the 2000s to play a series of shows, and the 2023 reunion effort Last Rays of a Dying Sun hit a graceful midpoint between the subtlety of the debut album and the harder attack of Crashing Dream.
