"Pioneering globe-trotting sonics crafted from thundering Senegalese griot talking-drum polyrhythms and light dub-techno flourishes from the Basic Channel originator. Strange Brew Presents
Mark Ernestus' NDagga Rhythm Force
+ O$VMV$M (Young Echo)
Saturday 9th August
7pm - 10pm
Basic Channel's dub techno pioneer meets some of Senegal's greatest sabar musicians for a deep, percussive and high-energy live performance - quite possibly one of the best live bands we've seen at the venue.
In its live formation, MENRF is comprised of Bada Seck, Amadou Sy Seck & Abass Seck on Sabar, Mbene Diatta Seck on vocals, Ousmane Ka on drums,
Ibrahima Mbaye on keys & Mark Stephen Ernestus on production.
Their latest record "Khadim" is a stunning reconfiguration of the Ndagga Rhythm Force sound, a style which is more dubwise; prickling with effects and spaciousness, with ambient sounds of Dakar street-life. The music throughout is taut, grooving, complex, like before; but more volatile, intuitive and reaching, with turbulent emotional & spiritual expressivity.
"One of the most impressive African bands on the contemporary gig circuit, throwing down live sets known to effortlessly go over 2 hours and propel so many legs and minds to new shapes and feels - trust they slay every time and should be top of all must-see lists." - Boomkat
Paired with O$VMV$M, the duo of Young Echo's Amos Childs (Jabu) & Sam Barrett (Neek) weave otherworldly sound collages from samples throughout the eras, shot with a smoky dubwise & cinematic sensibility.
Coming together through the loose knit radio sessions of Young Echo collective around the early 2010s - their sound evolved from a shared love of grime, soul, rap, b-movies, horror films and dancehall.
The two would spend evenings together making loops and then recording them to a borrowed reel to reel - recording over Pink Floyd albums (with some strange bleed through occurring at times).
They have worked extensively with vocalists, producing 2 full length albums for Manonmars, as well as an album with Franco Franco, 2 singles with Rider Shafique, original songs and remixes with Birthmark, Tricky, Jamakabi, BLYY and Bogues plus their most recent Shroud of Fear 2.
