Let Spin w/ Phenomenal Kissing at Strange Brew
Headfirst Editor's Pick

"Sell out warning! Nothing says ‘I love you honey’ like post-punk post-jazz. Knotty, angular rhythms and skronking virtuosity coming on like Bill Frisell, John Zorn and Lounge Lizards in a downtown car chase with Shabaka Hutchins and Melt Yourself Down. Thrilling, candlelit, Valentine’s weirdness."

“An electrifying live band" The Guardian
“British Punk Jazz with a wiry electrical crackle” Uncut

Bristol crowds already familiar with key groups such as Get The Blessing and Run Logan Run, will welcome the visit of post-jazz quartet Let Spin in celebration of their tenth anniversary and brilliant new album Thick as Thieves; the album has an understated intensity that shifts into direct & explosive focus in the live environment.

The egalitarian quartet, spread across Berlin & London, have been a celebrated part of the UK & European jazz scene since their formation in 2012. Individually they have contributed to well renowned projects such as Melt Yourself Down, Sarathy Korwar, Spike Orchestra, Beats & Pieces Big Band & Mercury Prize nominated Led Bib.

Their enveloping sound carries the distinct contemporary jazz identity of the fertile meetings of the ever evolving London jazz scene; here the multicultural urban experience - a collision of traditions, lived experience & an applied practice - crosses borders and finds expression in searching & propulsive, soaring, angular jazz of the built environment.

Compositions collapse into each other, dissolving melodic lines in a tapestry of brooding feeling, crashing drums & the heavy growl of whirling saxophone. Atmospheric guitar lines shift in dynamic movement, drawing in post rock elements that imbue the music with an unsettled tension. This is a contemporary jazz sound that brings in elements of post punk bass led rhythms, the cold, melancholic landscapes of German jazz label ECM & Slint-esque overdriven to clean guitar surges.

Opening the evening will be the debut performance of Phenomenal Kissing, the new free improv, pop & performance art project of Dan Johnson & Celeste Cantor-Stephens.

Key player in Bristol’s new music scene. Dan Johnson is one of the great drummers. From fuelling the sound of early Run Logan Run, the crowning EP/64 project, the improv duo with flautist Tina Hitchens to leading deep listening workshops alongside countless other projects past & present, Dan is ever searching.

Celeste Cantor-Stephens is an exciting collaborator bringing a classical charge to free improvisation & experimental music making. Her current projects include the graceful chamber folk duo Cirenne, the rotating cast of Bubbe's Cupboard, an improvised live scoring project as well as the improv trio Baldhu.

A candlelit & seated show at one of the city’s in venues on Valentine’s Day; for the romantic jazz heads as well as the explorative new music heads.

Greeting you with his fine style & considered selections on the turntables will be Parker - a veteran of musical taste and scenes from London, Cornwall & now Bristol. A wise, rich & deep bottle of red wine. Equally a haze of smoke & good beer. Music for every occasion.
