Pavel Milyakov + Richie Culver at Strange Brew
Headfirst Editor's Pick

"After climbing to the top of Moscow club culture as Buttechno, Pavel’s flowered as a mercurial many-headed beast careening through micro-textural ambient, harsh industrial, deconstructed choral trance, loping dubtech and everything under the sun FFO: Basic Channel, Lorenzo Senni, Lee Gamble, OPN, Rezzet. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

SHFTD + Strange Brew are ecstatic to present the prolific Russian electronic producer Pavel Milyakov AKA Buttechno for his debut Bristol show with support from the DIY ultra-art-spoken-word-experimentalist Richie Culver.

Pavel Milyakov
Opposed to the aggressive imperial politics of his homeland, Pavel uses his work to acknowledge the historical and cultural context, delving into sociopsychological issues that haunt the society, and addressing memory — both collective and individual — and its potential to change our visions of the future. Though produced with care and consideration, Milyakov’s recordings often bear the hallmarks of experimental recklessness, documenting his creative spirit with a sort of diaristic vulnerability. His music often resembles high-fidelity sketches: expertly produced excursions deliberately left in their nascent state. His music has drifted between genre and mood: four-on-the-floor techno, palatable indie rock, new age ambient, harsh drone, post-industrial to beat-less atmospheric ambient-like trance. Pavel has collaborations that range from Dirty Beaches’ Alex Zhang Hungtai, avant-saxophonist Bendik Giske to freak-folk style vocalist Yana Pavlova + Richie Culver who is supporting the evening. If you’re unfamiliar with the works of Pavel Milyakov, get familiar – this is a one-shot evening not to be missed.

Richie Culver
The release of his astounding, forward-thinking debut album ‘I Was Born By the Sea’ on REIF breaks boundaries between the combination of art and music and the power of experimental spoken word. “An album that serves as both an optimistic statement of intent and a final glance back at the painful places it explores”. It follows his recent work with Pavel Milyakov, an EP together in 2022, ‘A Change of Nothing’, 5 tracks that have a perfect mixture of the light & dark doom-ambient alongside Richie’s masterful spoken-word layers. Before that Richie also collaborated with Blackhaine and released a 2 track EP, Did U Cum Yet / I’m Not Gonna Cum’, a combination of extreme experimental and depressive-real-life storytelling. When it comes to a support act for Pavel Milyakov, Richie Culver couldn’t be a better fit – Richie has told us that he has a special one-off striped back audio-visual performance to deliver on the evening. Super exciting.
