Events on Sunday 23rd October
“BRFF’s contribution to Black History Month is a screening of Betrayal at Attica which investigates the five day prison occupation that took place outside New York in 1971. Ending with the massacre of 29 prisoners and 10 hostages, no one in authority has ever been charged with responsibility for the actions of police and prison guards that day. The film revisits the events and reveals the hidden evidence that points the finger where it belongs through radical lawyer Elizabeth Fink who tells the story of the Attica prison rebellion, and how she exposed the cover up that went on for decades.”

“Barter’s work is on first glance, a series of childlike sculptures combined to create an engaging installation. However, this playful exterior is deceiving as dead fish are strung up by hooks in their mouths whilst a giant cod lies lifeless behind. ‘It’s a Problem for the Kids’ looks to highlight climate damage, with the global issue of bottom trawling and overfishing being a key concern to the artist. Materials used in Barter’s piece (Steel, Latex, Plaster, Polystyrene, and jesmonite) include some that are considered environmentally 'harmful' to enhance its sinister aspect.”

“Guled (Omar Abdi) lives on the outskirts of Djibouti City with his wife Nasra (Yasmin Warsame) and their teenage son. Like his friends, Guled is a gravedigger; known locally as Ambulance Chasers, they make a living off the death of others. Nasra has been diagnosed with a kidney infection and desperately needs treatment. Guled has to somehow come up with $5,000 or Nasra will likely die... can he find the money to save her?”
