Playing Shakespeare - Language & Character by Actors' Workshop at Temple Church
See event details

A event on Monday 7th July. The event starts at 18:30.

In Shakespeare’s time, you went to “hear” a play, not see it. Starting with the opening scene from The Tempest, we will recreate the storm, meet the different people on the ship and see what we can learn about them from what they say and how they say it.

Moving on, we will apply this understanding to other plays, other characters. From kings to clowns, monks to mechanicals, magical characters to foreign princesses, we will encounter an eclectic cross-section of Elizabethan society and discover how they reveal themselves through the way they use language….

The Actors’ Workshop Bristol has built a unique reputation for teaching and performing Shakespeare – it lies at the very heart of our work. All students receive extensive training in classical verse.

Our productions of Twelfth Night in 2023 and Macbeth in 2024 at the Loco Klub, Temple Meads were sold out and hugely well-received. Directed and designed by Jennifer Higham & Clara Marullo and performed by graduating members of our Foundation Course in Acting, these fresh, innovative productions focused on making the storytelling relevant to a contemporary audience without ever compromising the verse.
