Claudio Ahlers is a German fine art photographer who lives and works in Montpelier, Bristol. Born in Porto Alegre, Brazil in 1966 he spend his childhood and formative years in Hamburg, Germany where he worked as a musician and in independent theatre before leaving for Manchester to study music in 1993.
After four years at Salford University College and another year completing a masters degree in composition at Bristol University, he has since worked in documentary and feature film making as a sound designer and composer.
An autodidact in the art of photography, he now dedicates his time to creating photographic works from his studio base in Montpelier, where he also collaborates with many of the artists who base themselves in and around Stokes Croft, Bristol’s most creative and independent street.
Drawing inspiration from his work in music, theatre and with the moving image, as well as the rich history of photographic art, he creates unique still photographs that capture the fleeting subtleties, striking contradictions and nuanced layers of human emotion and identity.
Since 2012 his photographs have been exhibited at The Grant Bradley Gallery, Bristol, the Tea Rooms Gallery, London, Achtizg Galerie Berlin, The Yeiser Arts Centre, Paducah Kentucky, USA and the Reminders Photography Stronghold Gallery in Tokyo.
2016 saw him host a one week residency entitled “Out of the River of Time” at SPACE in Bristol and a selection of photographs from his current series “Im Dunkeln” were published by international fine art photography annual THE OPÉRA in May the same year.
Claudio Ahlers is currently represented by Lane House Arts Gallery, Bath and www.lumitrix.com
