A
gig
held at The Big Chill Bar
on Tuesday 10th June. The event starts at 20:00.
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls it's that time of year. Exams are over, the sun is out and most importantly the JazzFunkSoul Society is proud to present the annual end of year blowout JFStival. And this year, we've taken the decision that all proceeds are going to charity!
We're going to be splitting our donations between two charities, the first of which is St Mungo's Broadway. They help people in Bristol and across the south of England recover from the issues that create homelessness and to rebuild their lives, providing beds and support to more than 2,500 people a night who are either homeless or at risk, and works to prevent homelessness, helping about 25,000 people a year.
The second charity we're pleased to help is outgoing President Patrick von Glehn's charity of choice - Basic Needs. They are an international development organisation founded by Chris Underhill MBE in 2000 to enable people with mental illness or epilepsy to have access to treatment, the opportunity to earn an income and to re-integrate themselves successfully into their families and communities. BasicNeeds currently works in Africa (Ghana, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, South Sudan) and Asia (India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan, China, Lao PDR and Vietnam) implementing its community based Model for Mental Health and Development.
The lineup is stellar: four of the best student bands around, plus an internationally acclaimed soul powerhouse. 'But who are they all?!' I hear you ask. Well, let's take you through the running order one by one
4pm: OPEN JAM
YES! Of course, as always we'll be kicking off with a spectacular completely open jam featuring much of the best up-and-coming talent on the Bristol scene YOU GUYS. Bring your weapon of bass destruction (and/or treble, alto, tenor, so on so forth, I just wanted to make a very dodgy pun) and unleash your inner musical beast in the Big Chill for a couple of hours.
6pm: Small Street Stomp
Small Street Stomp is a young eccentric child of the buzzing Bristol jazz scene, born happily kicking and cooing in the wild storms of winter 2013. It grew rapidly into a six-headed beast and can now be found dancing all over the twisting city hills. It was fed from birth a potent concoction of Fats Waller, Django Reinhardt & the Quintette du Hot Club de France, Tom Waits, Ben Webster, Louis Armstrong, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Sidney Bechet, King Oliver, and everything else it could grab in its greedy grubby young fingers. Expect irresistible danceability and strange storytelling from this bluesy gypsy swing sextet. Featuring JFS President 2014-15 Bethany Roberts on vocals and violin, alongside Big Band stalwarts Alex Pearce on tenor, Alfie Grieve on trumpet and Eva Redman on kit.
With influences ranging from James Brown to James Brown's backing band, their versatile and energetic beats will make you freeze at the knees. If you've seen them before, you'll know they're always fantastic in terms of musicianship and showmanship. If you haven't seen them before ask someone who has. They'll tell you the same. Big Band Society regulars Nicky Green, Rory Hird and Holly Wellington all feature, alongside some of the hottest student talent on the Bristol jazz scene.
Full of cheeky fun, the rhythm, horns and vocalist, Emma, groove on a huge selection of dance-floor fillers, crowd favourites and songs you don't know how you ever lived without. With inspiration from funk heavy artists such as The Apples, Tower of Power, Maceo Parker, Jill Scott, Michael Jackson, and even Rage Against The Machine, we'll also introduce you to a wealth of new music to both excite and entertain. Rubicon - a steaming hot tin of funk, best consumed late and loud! Featuring a veritable smorgasbord of Big Band/ex-Big Band talent, including JFS Vice-President 2013-14 James Vine on the drums, President Patrick von Glehn on bass and Tech Manager Espen Knoop on sax!
Ephemerals are a London based soul family featuring an allstar cast of musicians from Keke Mokoro, Gene Dudley Group, Dakhla, Kalakuta Millionaires, Marvelous & Bombs. Their music features heavy grooves and slick production, with singer Wolf Valbrun's distinctive howl on top. Subject matter includes love, social justice, environmental damage and self-determination. These guys are some of the best musicians in the country, with grooves that are not to be missed.
Need I say more? You'll definitely be partying hard with tunes produced by the best 20-odd players Bristol can muster. This juggernaut is so hip it has difficulty seeing over its pelvis and cooler than a polar bear in winter. They're simply excellent musicians and so incredibly together. This auditioned troupe from our brothers and sisters over at Big Band Society are the only way to see off the JFS year with a bang. Join us.
