Roots Arena and Bristol Dub Club presents ROOTS DAUGHTERS, a showcase of all-female roots reggae and jungle artists, on February 1st 2013 at the Black Swan, Bristol. Despite the often socially-conscious and uplifting message of roots reggae, the scene itself has always been male-dominated. This is true of a lot of the musical industry, but the uneven gender representation within the reggae scene is far more prevalent. So, in order to buck this trend, Roots Arena and Bristol Dub Club have collaborated to stage a unique event celebrating the contribution of women to the reggae scene.
On February 1st Roots Arena will be teaming up with the legendary Bristol Dub Club to stage an event showcasing some of the very best UK all-female roots reggae and jungle talent. Norwich based Roots Arena, a new record label and booking agent, aims to promote UK reggae by providing a platform for both established and emerging artists. Bristol Dub Club is a home-grown roots night created by local veteran sound system Jah Lokko, happening every first Friday of the month at the Black Swan, bringing pure vibes and upliftment to the crowd. Upstairs Ohmen Audio Sound System hosts the jungle room, on their bass heavy rig. The first Friday of February will prove to be no exception!
Room One will play host to some of the best female roots reggae singers , including Christine Miller who has worked with many of the leading roots producers across Europe including King Shiloh, Blackboard Jungle, Zion Gate, Conscious Sounds and is a regular face in roots dances throughout Europe. Also performing is Askala Selassie, one of Europe's best young female reggae artists, who has performed across Europe and in Jamaica. She has worked with some of reggae's most world renowned musicians including: Luciano, The Wailers band, Dwight Pinkney, Errol Dunkley, Andrew Tosh, Nadine Sutherland and Pam Hall. In 2005 she was recruited after a live show to tour Europe with the Wailers band and holds the record as the youngest ever Wailing sister. Other unmissable artists on the night include Maya, who is fast becoming one of the most sort after flutists in the reggae and dub industry; and expect all female D.J sets from Baby Dangerous, Bliss Zion, and Sasha Steppa. Room 2 will see some of the finest female jungle talent work their magic, including Little Monster, Elley Phunk, Tickles, and more.
To compliment the music expect Jah Workshop Rasta cultural stall and Sta' Kulcha with the finest selection of roots and culture vinyl and CDs. This event will prove to be unmissable for all reggae heads and jungle lovers. Join Roots Arena and Bristol Dub Club in skanking in celebration of the vibrant contribution women have made to roots reggae and jungle!
