A gig held at The Canteen on Friday 29th May. The event starts at 22:00.

Maracatu Nação Cambinda Estrela is one of the most vibrant and respected cultural groups from Recife, with a rich history dating back to 1935. Rooted in Afro-Brazilian traditions, the group has spent over nine decades preserving and evolving the powerful rhythms, songs, and ceremonial performance of maracatu.

This special UK tour brings a select group of master musicians directly from Brazil, led by their mestre (musical director), offering an authentic and rare opportunity to experience the energy of baque virado maracatu live. Combining driving percussion, call-and-response vocals, and striking presence, the performance captures the spirit of one of Brazil’s most powerful cultural expressions.

Celebrated for its award-winning carnival appearances and deep community roots, Cambinda Estrela is also known for its commitment to cultural education, Afro-Brazilian heritage, and social impact. Each performance is both a celebration and a living tradition, connecting audiences to the history, resilience, and joy at the heart of maracatu.
