Casa de Bamba are a Bristol based band playing traditional samba along with other Brazilian styles. At the heart of the music is the cavaquinho, a small 4 stringed instrument, and the 7-string guitar, these are joined by voices and traditional percussion (pandeiro, tam-tam, conga, berimbau, agogo, cuica, shakers, triangle etc.). Playing classic songs from artists such as Cartola, Clara Nunes and Martinho da Vila, the band has performed at various venues around Bristol. Casa de Bamba are a collective of 6 musicians sharing a love for Brazilian music and culture, all having lived or spent time in Brazil, and also playing in a variety of Bristol bands including Bloco B (Samba Batucada), Afon Sistema (Maracatu), Clube do Choro (Choro) The group was formed by Conor O’Brien (lead vocals, cavaquinho, berimbau) through jams and parties with Bristol Capoeira, a Brazilian form of dance/martial-art, and Brazilian music scene. They are joined by Claudio Campos on tam-tam, an experienced capoeira master from Brasilia who has grown up playing samba, and has been an integral part of the Brazilian community in Bristol for over 20 years.
