Headfirst Editor's Pick

"Free entry! Norwich > Nashville in the dusty world of Brown Horse; whose folkier slant on alt-country and Americana roots rock will grow an instant mullet down the necks of Felice Brothers, Jayhawks, Silver Jews, Langhorne Slim and Son Volt fans."

- Brown Horse -
Brown Horse are a Norwich-based country rock band. Rooted in a collaborative approach to songwriting, the six-piece mix guitar-driven 90s alternative rock with the folk & country sounds of the 70s. Reservoir is the debut album from Brown Horse, released on January 19th 2024.

Although recorded over just four days in a quiet corner of Norfolk, the album is a collaborative effort years in the making. Recipients of this year's Janice Long Bursary Award, the band have a Friday slot headlining stage 2 at next year's Moseley Folk Festival, as well as tour of Sweden, Norway & Denmark in February with Rootsy Music, headline dates at Norwich Arts Centre in January + Shacklewell Arms, Dalston & Elsewhere, Margate in March.

- Ead Wood -

Described as “defiantly original” by Clash Magazine, Ead Wood debuted as a solo project before its reimagining as a five-piece in 2022 complete with Banjo and Pedal Steel. The Bristol quintet have since established themselves as pillars of the Indie/ Alternative scene through an onslaught of releases and energetic live shows – including performances at Glastonbury festival ,Left of The Dial Festival and a recent appearance supporting Surf Curse at SWX in Bristol.

Their latest release, ‘A Sparkling Gift’ shows the band delving further into the realms of sonic experimentation – The EP finds the band in full command of their influences, with tracks bathed in pedal steel guitar, harmonica and ambient acoustics, offering a more focused distillation of the band’s developing sound than previous efforts. Lyrically, the songs of 'Sparkling Gift' find lead singer songwriter, Ed Soles, with a renewed clarity and maturity, finding sentiment and humour in life's most common places and everyday corners.
