BBQT is music that echoes sleaze and debauchery much like the characters of a Bakshi film.. BBQT was conceptualized in 2010 by Gabbie Bam Bam (SLEAZ-E G.). Using primitive instruments (a fisher price keyboard) and limited experience with recording; the first demos were made on a Fostex four track. The band's name sake is taken from the song written by art glam group Sparks. The first BBQT single was self-titled and released in 2012 on lathe 7" by boutique label Babycarrot records.
Starting to build an audience in Gabbie's hometown of Washington D.C. the live band itself has had several lineup changes since 2013 (around 50 friends and members initiated in from several bands around the country) proved BBQT was not just any band from a specific city at a specific time; instead forming as a multi city gang of rebellion.
Running like renegades and touring across the USA repeatedly, BBQT built a reputation of putting on unforgettable shows known for being wild and reckless (touring in a vehicle r eported stolen, managing a disintegrating west coast tour with five different drummers, and last minute lineups sometimes with as many as 7 members (often out of state) on stage. The band's agitator and leader Gabbie sometimes found herself in trouble with the law (being a arrested during a weekender supporting Drunk Mums and bailing out hours before playing their last show with them) attested to their mischievous reputation.
Is BBQT cursed with bad luck, or graced with a bad reputation?
The first release, "Let's Go" (2018 No Front Teeth Records) is an ode to the junk shop glam rock music of the 1970's. Told in the perspective of what is presumed to be an alien from a glam outer space experiencing the world for the first time. Gabbie shows her prowess as a songwriter often courting controversy with her songs' subject matter writing songs about her experiences being a sex worker, trauma, mental health and drug abuse and combining influences ranging from bands like the Kids,Blitz and Sister Rosetta Tharpe to films and novels like Christiane F. and Wild at Heart.
In late 2019, BBQT regrouped in Baltimore making its home base/recording band with friends integral to the music community of Baltimore. With over 4 decades of playing in bands between them lead guitarist and multi instrumentalist Alexander Briscoe Jr. (Sickle Cell, LIP), rips through songs with a voracious tenacity adding controlled chaos. Heather Kohlberger (LIP) downstrokes thunderous bass lines pulsing in response to Snake Berry's (LIP, Dinos Boys) tight and turbulent drumming, racing with such precision that isn't overtly premeditated. Gabbie Bam Bam, the feral leader maintains a supportive rhythm with her downstrokes and yowls lyrics of living a debaucherous life leading the rest of the gang at an equally exhilarating pace proving their stamina with every stroke.
