WeCanMake x South Asian Heritage Month at The Factory, Knowle West
https://wcm-aug-meetup.eventbrite.co.uk

A event on Today. The event starts at 17:00.

WeCanMake will be celebrating South Asian Heritage Month, and the crafts, values and practices from across the region that align with our work.

South Asian craft and construction techniques — like many indigenous ways to make and build — reveal an intimate understanding of local climates, materials, and community needs. For example, building with natural and locally sourced materials; incorporating rainwater management, earthquake resilience, or cooling techniques; and fostering collaboration through construction as a shared endeavour for a community or village.

At this meet-up, we’ll be using reclaimed/salvaged rope and timber to create a Charpai, a type of cot or bench (also called Charpaya, Charpoy, Khat, Khatla, Manja, or Manji). We’ll also learn about the concept of seva, or sadqa (‘selfless service’), and how it underpins South Asian approaches to design, reflected in how many South Asian homes are intergenerational and create social cohesion through communal layouts designed to be open, interconnected, and support social cohesion.
