An Evening of Poetry and Spoken Word, featuring
Andy Craven Griffiths,
John Berkavitch
and Michelle Madsen
(Hosted by Sally Jenkinson and Jonny Fluffy Punk)
June's event is going to be a cracker! We'll get you started with a slam, featuring some of the finest local up and comers that Bristol has on offer (bring your poems!). Later on we'll toss you some treats before dessert and allow you the pleasures of eclectic wonders Michelle Madsen and John Berkavitch. Finally, we'll roll out the icing to our little cake, and serve up some Andy Craven-Griffiths. Mmmm... tasty. This is an evening not to be missed!
About the poets...
John Berkavitch:
Leicester's most versatile b-boy, poet John Berkavitch, is a vision of the near future set in 1989.
One fifth of the Urbanian Quarter, Artist, Vandal, Poet, Writer, Rapper, Comic, Conceptual Thinker, Collaborator, Human-Beatbox and Surrealist, Berkavitch is a Midlands-based live artist and is probably best known for his Slam Poetry, Spoken Word Performances and zebra costumes. He's been swanning around Cambodia for years making a nuisance of himself, and now he's back to bother our little stage with his big words. And we couldn't be more excited.
Andy Craven-Griffiths:
One of the fastest rising stars in British poetry, Andy Craven-Griffiths intends to be an infinite length of string with one end tied to a boomerang. After winning slams including Manchester Lit Festival Slam, Glastonbury, and the Munich Slam (where he thinks they gave him top marks mainly for his lovely English accent), he's agreed to descend from on high to spread his lovely words across the toast of our ears. Nutritious and delicious.
Here are some things people say about Andy Craven-Griffiths:
'If MacBeth had been into hip hop, he'd have sounded a bit like this. ' - Apples and Snakes
'100 miles per hour. That was my heart, and the poems weren't too bad! ' - Selena Saliva Godden
'He's like a prettier version of me. ' - John Berkavitch
Michelle Madsen:
Michelle Madsen is an undercover poet. Host of Hammer and Tongue London, and scourge of festivals and slams around the country by night, she ennervates as a journalist by day. She has collaborated with members of Beatabet and the Antic Establishment, and performed in venues from San Francisco to Aarhus. Michelle's poetry is jibing, dark and as delicious as a bowl full of crack coated toffee apples, encompassing all sins, heartbreak and anarchy.
The first time we saw her perform, it was three years ago and we were huddled in the Poetry Tent at Secret Garden Party, helplessly drunk at 3am. Her poems saved our soul a bit that night. She said something ethereal about starfish that we've never forgotten. Don't miss this lovely poet.
NB- This is our lasy event until September, we are busy with festivals and the lark over summer so we won't see you for a few months!
Come down to the boat to wave us off, its gunna be sooooo lush.
Love, Sally, James, Jonny and Chelsey X
