event
on Sunday 14th September. The event starts at 11:00.
Greenbank Folk Club presents the second workshop from Hannah Moore: Storytelling for Sessions, Shows and Starry Nights - a day-long workshop on the craft of telling folktales in the oral tradition with opportunities for musicians to join in.
You do not have to have attended Hannah's first workshop (pt.1) in order to attend and for this to be enjoyable and useful in developing your craft. All are welcome to come along and no prior experience is necessary.
Here's all you need to know about the workshop...
The event will run from 11am until approx 5pm. Tickets are limited to 24 participants so please book in advance! Doors will be open from 10:30am so you can come in and get settled.
A day-long creative workshops for storytellers of all abilities, and for musicians who are interested in playing for stories.
You can come as a storyteller or as a musician. In the workshop, storytellers and musicians will collaborate. Together we will explore how to tell folk and fairy tales in the oral tradition, and how to weave music into the telling.
Tellers and musicians will work alongside each other in a series of creative exercises, finding and learning ways to bring a story to life for an audience. The workshop will look at how to use the storyteller's core instrument of their own body, voice and words. Also, it’ll look at how to combine these storytelling techniques with musical improvisation and composition, so that both the storyteller and the musician are creatively conjuring the story before the eyes and ears of the listeners.
No previous experience of telling stories or of playing for stories is required
You can expect a day of:
- Exploring the power of your imagination and creative craft - as a musician or a storyteller
- Learning new ways to remember stories without learning a script
- Developing techniques for making live storytelling vivid and engaging - how to open up the cinema in your listeners' minds and transport people deep into the pictorial realms of wonder, delight and wisdom that the old tales carry, through words and music
- Playful tools for collaboration across different art forms
With the opportunity to share a scratch telling at the end of the day!
Hannah Moore is a traditional storyteller and facilitator with a deep love for how we bring the old tales to life and make them relevant to today. She is an associate teacher with the School of Storytelling and performs all round the UK and in Europe. She is also a ceilidh caller and folk artist, among other things!
Hannah frequently teaches storytelling to adults and young people alike, and is delighted to run a full day session with Greenbank Folk Club. www.hannahmoore.co.uk
Alex Garden is a folk musician, producer and engineer with a passion for improvised music. You may have seen them perform with Tarren, The Drystones, Sheelanagig or their duo with percussionist Harriet Riley. They also run all of the sessions, ceilidhs, gigs and events at Greenbank Folk Club! www.alexgardenmusic.co.uk
