Greenbank Folk Club presents a workshop from Lucy & Hazel: Find your voice, find your feet: Improvised folk dance and music.
This workshop will centre on a traditional dance from Sweden, the slängpolska, which is entirely improvised and uses dance as a conversation between two people. We will also look at improvised vocal and instrumental music to co-create dance music for each other.
Participants can expect to develop skills in improvised dance and music, listening to each other and having fun in conversation through music and dance. You will also learn a little bit about Swedish dance music and rhythms!
This workshop is for anyone interested in learning a new dance form. The slängpolska is very easy for anyone to pick up and is mostly based on a walking rhythm. It is open for dancers, instrumentalists and singers.
Folks need to bring comfy clothes and shoes. The more slidey your shoes are, the better.
Lucy spent a year studying at the Eric Sahlström Institute where she learned Swedish dance and has been teaching it in the UK for the past decade with the Third Beat Dance Collective.
The event will run from 5:30pm until approx 8pm. Guests are encouraged to join us down stairs in the bar afterwards to join in The Greenbank Session which will be running that evening. Tickets are limited to 40 so please book in advance!
Greenbank Folk Club is committed to developing our access & inclusion in every aspect of what we do. Please get in touch if you have any particular access needs or would like to make a suggestion for how we can do things better in the future. We encourage you to fill out our survey after each event so we can hear your thoughts - QR code available in the venue.
This event takes place upstairs at The Greenbank Pub, Easton, Bristol BS5 6DP - unfortunately there is currently no wheelchair access to this space as it's accessed by stairs.
£5 tickets are available in advance - tickets on the door will also be £5. We strongly advise that you book in advance if you'd like to attend as we cannot guarantee there will be door tickets available if the event sells out.
Please tell your friends and share this event - live music and dancing only takes place with the support of the community around us.
We would like to thank our partner projects, The Greenbank, EFDSS (English Folk Dance and Song Society) and Arts Council England for their support in this project.
