DJ Marcelle, Copper Sounds, k means, Sarahsson at The Island

A clubnight held at The Island on Friday 13th November. The event starts at 21:00.

Copper Sounds celebrate the release of ‘Process’ on the Collapsing Drums label with a special club event at The Island, featuring DJ Marcelle, Sarashsson, k means and a live set from Copper Sounds.

The new album features a return to the duo’s distinctive DJ set - using turntables to unlock rhythms within the surface of materials to create raw, percussive constructions. The album features a suite of apposite remixes from  DJ Marcelle, Sarahsson, Mariam Rezaei, Milkweed and The Gate. These material rhythms were built for the club, so it felt important to bring them home.

Amsterdam’s DJ Marcelle / Another Nice Mess treats the DJ booth as a site of joyful disruption. Navigating three turntables and a seemingly bottomless collection, she throws everything at you from post-punk, dub, techno, noise, bass, Jungle, avant-garde electronics and everything in between. Decades of touring, broadcasting and releasing music have only sharpened her appetite for risk: her sets are improvised, mischievous and liable to change direction without warning. No genre is left intact, no transition obliged to behave.

Copper Sounds are a Bristol-based duo creating process-led club music using self-cut copper dubplates, contact microphones, ceramics and other resonant materials. Their work combines physical sound-making processes with electronic music, building rhythms from collisions and accidental sounds. During their expanded dj sets they juggle four turntables to extract and manipulate the native and otherwise dormant sounds of their eclectic record collection.

Sarahsson is an artist working across composition, acoustic research, sculpture and performance to expose the physical properties of consonance and dissonance. Dealing with themes of femininity, interiority and mythology, Sarahsson uses genre as a compositional tool either to twist through dramatic shifts at breakneck speed or float indefinitely between, and has brought her unique ear for melody and rich textural harmony across Europe from Berlin's Volksbühne to the BBC Proms.

k means likes to throw you in at the deep end. As a resident at Bristol’s mind-expanding Psychotherapy Sessions, their commitment to the fringes is borne out in an omnivorous appetite for sound, an exploratory approach that sees the selector navigating the wildest terrain and loosest vibes while maintaining a laser focus on the dance floor, spinning you out only to snap you back in.
