Forma: Rhyw, Yushh, Dom Carlo & severine at The Island
Headfirst Editor's Pick

"Razor-sharp club futurism at its finest! Local spinner Severine has been busy carving out the Bristol circuit with discombobulated rhythms delivered in a thrillingly uncanny, disorienting style. Their latest venture brings together Rhyw and Yushh – two of the slickest selectors shaping sleek, contemporary club sounds FFO: Timedance, Livity Sound, CCL, Wisdom Teeth, Fever AM."

A clubnight held at The Island on Saturday 21st March. The event starts at 23:00.

A long time in the making.

This March, Forma launches in the depths of The Island with a focused night of forward-leaning club music rooted in pressure, texture and physical sound. We invite Rhyw to Bristol for the opening edition alongside Bristol's Yushh and Dom Carlo.

Rhyw's music moves like liquid mercury - slick, mutable and playfully disobedient. Known globally as one half of Fever AM alongside Mor Elian, Rhyw’s sound fuses ultra-modern techno with broken rhythm, modular grit and razor-sharp sound design, slipping into otherworldly spaces while never fully leaving the dancefloor. His selections are a masterful blend of genres where traditional rhythms meet the unpredictable, all enriched with his distinctive synaesthetic sound-design.

With releases on Fever AM, VOAM, Avian and Modeselektor’s SSPB, and sets spanning Berghain, Berlin Atonal and Boiler Room Tokyo, Rhyw has become known for balancing intricacy with impact. His VOAM release Honey Badger was widely hailed as one of 2022’s defining tracks, with Resident Advisor calling it “an anthem in the classic sense… where he perfects his brand of twisted mutant techno.”

Support comes from Yushh, who continues to go from strength to strength following a standout performance at Draaimolen alongside CCL. Her dubbed-out, atmospheric selections need no introduction. This Bristol figurehead carves out a singular space in contemporary club music. Deeply informed by soundsystem culture, her sound is low-end heavy, percussively unpredictable and rich with phantasmic melodic detail. With releases on Rhythm Section, Wisdom Teeth, Banoffee Pies and her own Pressure Dome imprint, Yushh’s sets feel alive and exploratory, unfolding in real time.

Setting the tone are Dom Carlo and Severine. With releases on Amity, Elicit Records and Obligated Records, Dom Carlo’s sound sits deep within the UK bass continuum. His selections are defined by stripped-back percussion, sub-low insistence, and pressure placed in all the right corners - precise, restrained and built for the system. Joining him is Forma head Severine, honing in on metallic textures and low-end alchemy at the forward fold of bass music. Their sets slickly draw you into a deeper drive, sustaining momentum without ever compromising a meditative core.

This first edition lands in one of the city’s favourite stripped-back rooms: low ceilings, a heavy system provided by AMBER AUDIO, and no distractions. Specialised will be designed by Occyx. There is no better place for this than The Island - industrial yet intimate, a stripped-back former police station that has long been the backbone of Bristol’s underground scene.
